What is computer graphics? It is a field that combines computer science, mathematics and art. Over the years it has become an inseparable element of most industries. In fact, it’s hard to point out a product that hasn’t been touched by the hand of computer graphics – from the logotype on the advertising pen, the packaging of the washing powder, to the design of the car, yacht or plane.

The general term “graphics”, until relatively recently, referred to designing and drawing with the hand. The work of graphic designers, when technology and access to computers was not yet widespread, consisted of sketching and designing, as it is today. However, it was a longer, more time-consuming process and often did not forgive mistakes.

With the development of computer science and, a little later, the popularization of computers and graphic tablets, a new field was created – computer graphics. It became a modern, digital version of classic graphics, opening up completely new possibilities for specialists. What is computer graphics? What can you use it for?

History of computer graphics creation

The use of computer graphics dates back to the 1950s, but it is only in the 1980s that computer graphics can be considered as the time when it was in its greatest development and blossom. More and more companies started to reach for digital solutions. One of them, which had a significant share in the creation and dissemination of computer graphics in the world.

Computer graphics were mainly used by advertisement designers, larger publishers and editors working there. In turn, thanks to the possibility of transferring photographs in paper form to the digital environment – computer graphics were also used by photographers.

When writing about the development of computer graphics in the world, it would be a sin not to mention. Thanks to the introduction of the first computers, which could be used e.g. at home, the possibilities of graphic design, which previously was reserved only for the few with access to unique devices, have also increased. Without the creation of publicly available electronic devices, the popularity of computer graphics would not have had a chance to exist.

Currently, computer graphics is one of the most dynamically developing industries. Thanks to it, new opportunities have appeared not only in the commercial industry. Thanks to three-dimensional graphics and modern digital printers there are also quite new perspectives in the field of e.g. designing dentures of various body parts, dental implants, etc.

How to professionally answer the question – what is computer graphics? Computer graphics is the art of drawing pictures, lines, diagrams, etc. using special software. Basically, there are two types of computer graphics. It will be vector graphics and raster graphics.

Projects made with raster graphics consist of pixels (a pixel is the smallest unit represented on a computer screen). Vector graphics is a set of mathematical functions (curves, lines and points located on a coordinate system). What’s more, the vector image is very sharp and high quality – pixels are not visible after its approximation.

Computer graphics is a significant part of the IT industry. Thanks to special software, it is possible to visualize reality digitally and its further use is already the responsibility of the designer. Nowadays it is possible to boldly compare computer graphics with creative work such as painting and sculpting.

A graphic designer, just like a visual artist, creates a project according to his own concept, with the difference that it is done in a digital form. A good graphic tablet and appropriate software serves as a palette and brush.

Computer graphics includes two-way communication between the computer and the graphic designer. The designer, thanks to the appropriate software, gets full control over the image displayed on the computer screen. Thanks to technological advancement, the image changes immediately in response to the commands of the computer graphic designer.

While performing even the simplest work, the computer receives a number of commands, each of which generates a graphic response that can be seen on the screen. Computer graphics is therefore an interactive “cooperation” between a person and a computer, which is connected by appropriate software.

Computer graphics can also be understood in a different way. Digital graphics are often also called finished projects, drawings, logos, website designs, animations etc. This concept can therefore be considered as the final work of a graphic designer.

What is computer graphics for?

In fact, it would be easier to answer the question what it is NOT for. Images and graphic designs are used to create films, create video games, computer programs, 3D modeling, design logotypes, leaflets, advertisements, books, magazines, prototypes of packaging and objects, retouch photos and a number of other commercial and non-commercial works. Although a good computer graphic designer doesn’t have to have an artistic jam – some artists create computer graphics as a work of art.

3D graphics

The 3D computer graphics deserve a separate description. It is thanks to it that it is possible to create three-dimensional objects using shapes and colors. 3D computer graphics differs from a two-dimensional image, the projection of a three-dimensional model of the scene.

In order for a graphic designer to create a three-dimensional object, he should use special software for this purpose. The resulting model can be an exact reflection of the object in a real candle. It can be e.g. a building body, figure, car design, etc.

3D computer graphics are used to create three-dimensional images on a flat screen or sheet, in any industry – mostly in science and industry. What’s more, 3D graphics are more and more often used in modern, high-tech medical imaging systems, architectural visualization, but also in computer games and film industry.
